Interesting, I find american movies and series are mixed with lower voice volume than british ones, even when my 5.1 system was state of the art (ACURUS ACT3 processor and corresponding power amps plus T&A TB140 speakers with corresponding surround speakers, I think 7.1 wasn't even invented then) the voices of US movies felt always too low compared to the effects so you had to crank it right up to understand what was said or increase the centre speaker volume disproportionately. When you get german or spanish dubbed sound the voices are louder also.
I doubt the reasons for the bad speach volume given are the only ones and that it could be resolved as dubbed movies have the effects and voice volume is at a level it can be understood, movies must be produced with dubbing for foreign broadcast in mind after all.

Dude (Old Spike)
I have Logitech THX 2.1 speakers on my PC costs 300 new got it second hand for 75 shipped, it gives me perfect sound, THX is the highest sound quality i understand everything because of them, and it feels like a cinema, every little sound detail reaches my ears.
If the channels are compressed in only 2 does not matter it is the range and volatility of the speakers mostly, on crappy speakers you can't hear anything even if they are 7.1
