Do not buy expsensive brushes to start. You WILL ruin them. Learn to paint first, learn about brush care. Then after an army or two look at some choicier brushes.

If you invest in games workshop paints, buy them a few colors at a time. Dont buy box sets as many colors you won't use. And make sure to buy some cheap 20ml dropper bottles on e bay to transfer your paints. Otherwise they will dry up.

Also, Vallejo, War colors, scale 75, and army painter are excellent, sometimes better alternatives to GW paints. Better value per volume as well.

I would add dont buy overly expensive brushes but I would add but a good quality one from the beginning, simply because you can learn and get used to the brushes strokes etc, when you change brushes it feels a bit off... buy a basic brush from each brand and see how it feels, if you find the right one stick with that brand and expand.... my first set was a pro arte prolene plus (years ago when it was slightly more expensive) and I stuck with them for a long while and did a good job.... they werent overly expensive nor cheap as hell... just perfect price and lasted a long time.

You are correct that you could practice on cheap ones but if you get too used to the strokes the  feel of others wont be right and you could be put off, like a harry potter wand... you pick a set and stick with it for life.

I started with a set of princetons. About 4 buck cad each. After about 10 figures my size 0 and size 1 frayed. I ordered a stain less steel brush to see if I recover them them from boiling in vinegar and a good scrub. I'm not hopeful about it.

I buy a value pack of brushes from walmart. And my size 1 and size 0 are still going after almost 30 figures.

A part of it could be I'm handling paint better, but over all my pricier ones are trashed. Once I'm done this army I'll look into some better ones. Teeth smear is so annoying to fix. Irises and pupils are out of my league right now.

"Irises and pupils are out of my league right now"... pin vice, small drill bit, drill the pupils where you want the irises, use shade to get into the drilled part then paint the white around it... try that

I'll try that out on a practice model. My next good brush I buy will be a 00, which should be helpful for working that small.
