except for that they do? a temporary ban is hardly evidence one way or the other. it takes time for guns to get out of circulation, and in countries that have banned high capacity guns that's exactly what happened. so america has 30m legal guns, when they're banned it may take 10 years to get them all off the street. at that point, where exactly is the black market going to get any more from?

there's faulty logic in the black market argument. where does the black market get its guns? with drugs sure it doesn't work because drugs can be grown easily, but guns are much more difficult. in places like australia which have seen successful gun bans, black market weapons have arisen, and this is where the gun lobby inserts its false equivalence. in australia the black market has no source for ar-15s because there are no legal owners to obtain them from, so the black market guns are much lower quality. the black market guns used in crime in australia typical result in no casualties. once last year a home made gun was used in a robbery, and the first shot was so wild it went nowhere near the victim, and the second shot blew up in the barrel, injuring the assailant. that is orders of magnitude better than black market ar-15s.

all of that said, australia doesn't actually have a gun ban - they have gun licensing. you can legally buy an ar-15, you just have to earn and maintain your license.

Not to mention to remove this sweet sweet freedom it require one of two things.

Force. Good luck with that. Can the government succeed? Absolutely. But not without the blood of millions on it's hands. Actions like that will totally redine the meaning of red states.

A referendum. 70% are not going to  vote in favor of amending the constitution.

There will be a point when people stop paying heed to bans. A federal ban of assault weapons nationwide would be one of those moments.

Step 1: Government says "We're coming for your guns!"

Step 2: Governments says "JK!  But here's the draft - need you for the war, k?"

Optional step 3 for a Naziesque play of events: Goverment says "Yo, meth is legal"

Oof. That's a good way to prime an expansion or war effort, if ever needed.
