Either it mutated to a less lethal strain or the vulnerable are isolating themselves. Herd immunity would not prevent deaths, it prevents the spread. Sorry I could only get half way through, this dude is putting me to sleep!

not necessarily a mutation, the non-lethal version of a virus is always going to become dominant as living hosts can spread their version of the virus much more effectively than dead ones. this doesn't mean the more deadly version is gone or has changed into anything.
