I'm curious to know if there is the drawback of a constant risk of infection to this surgery, since there is now a gap between the skin and the metal rod that leads directly to the bone and muscles.

I'd recommend double o-ring seal.

i thought the same thing, how do they keep infection out, they probably can't to a certain extent so they probably clean it often. just like people that have to wear a halo when they break their neck and have screws in their head.
found another article that describes it a bit better https://www.popsci.com/fda-approves-prosthetic-legs-anchor-directly-bone/ shaft goes inside, they let it heal and the bone to grow around it, then insert a part into that.

That's a big step in cybernetics.
Another science wonder that was only in movies a few years ago.
I imagine in the future this will be the "budget" option, while the rich can have a limb regrown and transplanted.
