Ah ok.  If there's just 3 numbers in the combination it's not a big deal to brute force. 

Add a few more and your grandchildren will be the ones that see it be opened.

most safes are 3 number combinations. you can get a 4 number combination. both have them have the same principals behind them, last number can't be lower than 10 and can't be higher than 90. but yes. you can brute force them. its just not a good time, you can also get a safe to work on only one number. most safes come with a combo of 50

yes and no. it really depends on the quality of the safe.

the above picture is from a cheap safe, you dial the combo and that lines up the gates on the wheels. allowing the handle to be turned and the bolts to retract. well in this case, all you have to do is apply a bit of tension on the handle as you turn the dia. the wheels are not exaclty the same size, so when you trap one wheel, you start turning the other way, and then the other way...

they then added notches to give you the false sense that you got a number.
