There were an estimated 50 tourists on White Island when it errupted.
23 have been evacuated with 5 dead & the other 18 all injured. Aus PM says Australians were involved.
Military has been called in to help police with the rescue efforts.

NZ is a dump anyway......kidding obviously, it's possibly the most magically beautiful place I have ever seen/will ever see and I regret I was only there for 4 days. I hope the victims are few and there is no 1888 Krakatoa-type eruption there. Had to look at a map and see it was far north but a tsunami would do serious damage.

Been here in NZ for work the last 2 weeks. Working on the coast. They went over tsunami evacuation when we got here, so they are aware of the dangers.
Its fucking beautiful and I may just buy a piece of land and retire here someday. You can get a couple actes of paradise with a stream running through your yard for $100k US.

Just found out a co-worker's cousin was a tourist operator there & was hit by a rock as he ran towards a helicopter. Killed instantly :(

8 people are confirmed to be still on the island so total death toll looks to be 13.

Update 3: looks like the deathtoll is about 16, possibly 2 more on top of that.
They still haven't collected all the bodies off the island because it's not safe.
