Can't these forced messages not be turned off or at least to silent? This is an invasion of privacy. Didn't anybody sue?

It is not actually. Like they said the powerplant will sound an alarm for everyone to hear when something is really wrong and, as already detailed in other submissions here, these messages more often than not are just a nuisance.

One should have a choice, like putting them on silent, turning them off and chosing the kind of messages you want to receive.

In Canada, specifically Ontario, all alerts are at a "presidential level" IE there is no way to turn them off unless you root your phone and dive into the code (which is ironically illegal to do. With this specific story, the Ontario alert system sent out the notification without any indication or notice from the plant. IE the system that distributes the alert went off on it's own, which would require mulitple signoffs to happen AND the alert from the plant (If it was a real disaster the alarm system would be going off in Pickering). In short, the alert system got hacked, and based on the evidence of Iranian hacking on US systems after the plane being shot down, I wouldn't be surprised if that is tied to it as we have been tied to hacking of Iranian nuclear facilities with the US and Israel.
