Temperature anomalies do not necessarily mean a higher temperature. There can be a negative anomaly which indicates that the observed temperature was cooler than the reference value.

Here is one of the questions asked by one twat on here answered already, LOCAL weather phenomena will get more severe due to global warming. 

ALSO (it has been mentioned already) This refers to LOCAL phenomena that are caused by a GLOBAL issue "we had the coldest, hottest, wetest, driest...." are all local phenomena and may or may not be directly linked to global warming!
