Doesn't really matter much, its already spreading and they cannot control it. THink about it, they have a population of over a billion people, half the people who catch this requires intensive care, there are not enough hospitals and they cant build enough to care for all who catch this and more people will die. This is NOT comparible to sars or the flu, the stats of people who needs intensive care is way higher and the death rates are way higher. Most people who catch the flu dont require intensive care, yes more die but its becuase more people catch it, this virus IS like the flu but worse, give it time and the death rate will rise.

What's your estimate for total 2020 deaths from this virus?

Dont know, a few thousand to millions. Too many factors to figure that out and too little info and too early to tell atm. If this is airborne then we are fucked. SARS spreads by touching droplets from an infected person, this might spread by catching a ride on shit in the air. I was never concerned about aything before becuase of the way they spread, this does scare me. Not so much that I'd die or my family but the way society will break down. Also, my parents and my girlfriends parents, if they catch it, they be dead.

I stand by my prediction of 100-1000 deaths total. It's looking to peak in the coming days, if not already. Yesterday the increase of confirmed cases was a lower percentage than the day before so it may no longer be exponential.

I think you have 5 confirmed cases of it in the US so far. There's 1 suspected case here now. WHO will convene another meeting soon on whether or not it's a global emergency. Right now it's at the highest alert level before declaring it an int'l emergency.

There's basic info about the nature of the virus on this page [link], & a link on that page to dispell rumours [link]. Maybe grab some antiviral masks, hand sanitiser & board games if you wanna prep. Boosting your immune system helps (exercise, garlic, vitamins etc), not to prevent catching it but to survive.

Im not freakin out about this, but I am concerned. Im not an end of the world prepper or anything. Problem is there is nothing you can do to prevent catching this if everyone around you has it. Eventually you have to leave your bunker/house and get supplies and run into infected people. I am more concerned with runs on supermarkets and other break downs of society. Im getting some MRE's just in case, and if I dont need them then I could use them for camping. Masks wont help unless you have a full face mask with filter. I dont even think hand sanitizers would work. Probably the best thing to do is to just catch it and get it over with before the hospitals fill up. That is IF it does get that bad. With that said, it does look like it will be that bad.

Camping is a good idea if you have that gear. The most precaucious people I've seen in Wuhan, when they go out for supplies wear gloves, masks & swimming goggles, don't touch any surfaces, constantly sanitise their hands then shower afterwards. That link gives some info about the sanitiser you need, something like 60-80% ethanol minimum.

If it had got this severe in the US instead of China, it would be bloody chaotic I reckon. There'd be looting & possibly martial law in trouble spots. If it gets to 100 cases in the US with multiple screw ups to spread it around it might be time to hatch a plan.

I got a camp deep in the forest on a small lake, been in my family for over 100 years. Thats my true bugout location. Spent a couple of months up there by myself with just rice and beans when I was 19,learned all about wild edibles and making traps, so I know I could do it again.

I have to say I am impressed with how fast and responsive the world is on handling this. It makes scenarios like 12 Monkeys that much harder to happen. Of course a killer airborne virus that can live for days will be a totally different game. But the difference of people being careless and ignorant vs going into quick lock down could be our best chance for future success.
