Lockpicking requires the technician to actually put effort in developing a skill and becoming good at it (supposing the lock wasn't set to be easily picked). Any idiot with opposable thumbs and a power drill can drill out a lock. And I'm not even sure about the opposable thumbs part. If anything they should charge LESS for drilling out and destroying the lock out instead of picking it. A lot of locksmith companies are hiring incompetent people and are charging as if they were highly trained and skilled workers.

My personal experience with a locksmith wasn't that much better. I had just moved in a new house and needed the lock changed. The house front door a Smart Key lock. They were a new thing to me and didn't know I didn't need a smith for that back then.

Without even touching it the guy already argued that these were "cheap" and "prone to break" and that I should replace it. He then pretended to try to re-key the lock and then said that he couldn't because it was "broken". He also hadn't brought the right key for that lock either. He took it off my door and "tried to fix it" in the back his truck, at which point it exploded into flying tiny springs and pieces of metal. He said it was a "lost cause", said I was going to need a new lock that luckily he has. I told him to leave it there for now and continue with re-keying the other locks of the house that were traditional locks. I've picked up all the pieces and went to work on it on my living room table in the meantime. Before he was done with the other locks I had put it all back together and even figured out how to properly re-key the lock to the new key (I had also filed down an existing key so it fit in the Smart Key lock). Ultimately the guy charged me for his time only, even though I've essentially done half of the work for him. IDK if he was truly that incompetent or was trying to screw me over to sell me one of his own locks to replace the smart Key lock but ever since I have always done my locksmithing work myself whenever I moved to a new place.

Morale of the story: Don't pay someone to do somnething unless you haven't properly checked if you can't do it yourself. You might do a better job than them.

so weiser is cheap lock, not in price but quality. weiser was bough by Kwikset close to 10 years ago. they bought it so they didnt have to work up brand recognition. they then introduced the smart key system which went from using hard brass pins

to softer, resettable aluminum wafers

the big problem with that change is for one, the quality of lock.  so if lets say you get home tonight and stick the wrong key in the lock and put some force behind the turn. your going to damage one of the wafers, if one of those wafers get damaged, you're locked out. to add to that. they use a sidebar, which means when the right key is inserted, a groove on the left of the above pic line up with all 5 wafers and a bar is able to be pushed in allowing the lock to turn. thats means you can't pick this lock. you might be able to if you spend a few hours. then you add salt. you can force the lock open with a flat screw driver and then force it back and you wouldnt know someone broke in
