Some counter points:

- People of the Donbass & Crimea held referendums to be annexed to Russia in 2014, both passed.

- Russia facilitated the referendum in Crimea & proceeded to annex it but with Donbass they didn't even recognize their declaration of independence in 2014, instead tried for 8 years to facilitate a diplomatic solution that didn't involve messing with sovereignty of Kyiv regime, this effort ultimately failed.

- Ukraine as an independent country has only existed for 31 years & it's largely become a failure, with particular thanks thanks to western meddling in recent years which has unleashed a fascist form of nationalism that's only getting more extreme & in Russia's eyes is dangerous & even genocidal.

- Most of Ukraine's territory gifted by Moscow:

here's the article he's talking about, if anyone's interested in reading it firsthand rather than listen to Beau's interpretation: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/what-russia-should-do-ukraine-translation-article-russian-

The article isn't exactly shocking to me, if you listen to Putin's Feb 21 speech he goes over the history & laments a the chain of decisions that gave parts of Russia to Ukraine & then broke those parts away from Russia in 1991. Those were rather eyebrow-raising statements considering the sanctity of territorial integrity under UN Charter but largely went unnoticed in western press - none of whom published his speech in full. Seems Russia sees this UN system as inadequate for solving the problems they & their ethnic Russian neighbours are facing & shit's given way to raw power politics - a game the west loves to play when it suits them. Russia was warning for years as these rules were being trampled on by the likes of the US & its fiefdom, how dangerous of a precedent it was setting etc.

Beyond the UN Charter, in Europe it's been more the Helsinki Accords which have set the tone for peace between states there since 1975. The west took a big shit on them in 1999 by attacking Serbia & again in 2014 by overthrowing the Ukraine govt & installing a client regime in Kyiv. This one way traffic of ignoring the agreed principles & rules couldn't last forever.

Some snips from Helsinki accords that west shat on, leading to today:
