occured to me a couple years back, and i think i even had a discussion somewhere on here about it, that people in general seem to have undergone some kind of psychological shift, and i wondered if it was a widespread addiction to dopamine hits caused by 'likes'. it seems to be pushing people to even more extreme views and behavior, which means less and less reasonable views and behavior, as they chase the dopamine like any other addict.
a subset of the phenomenon seems to be the up and down voting process itself. people aren't voting based on how well an argument has been made or even whether they actually like the content or not, but to make themselves feel good - downvoting a person who they've decided is on the wrong team gives a nice neuro-reward. this all comes together to make the current hysterias much stronger and more pervasive than those of the past.
