Mccain is definitely no war hero. He was a shit pilot & lost a bunch of hardware in a war of aggression (war crime) that shouldn't have been waged. Calling people like that war heroes is like a sympathy compliment. So Trump's right on that one.

I don't know the fine details of McCain's service. But the main point is that Trump's attempt to belittle someone for being shot down and captured during his military service while he himself dodged the draft through highly suspicious means is a rather unwitting thing to do to say the least.
As a minimum surviving a Vietnamese POW camp is a proof of grit and determination to go through severe hardship that Trump can only pretend to be capable of, which he does profusely. This transcends anyone's opinion on the war.

And in the hypothetical event that he talked, you don't know what was done to him to break him and you also don't know how you would have reacted in this situation yourself.

I think you're missing the whole point.
It isn't about McCain. It isn't about the legitimacy of the Vietnam war either as I already said. It is about Trump displaying once again a complete lack of self-awareness and tactfulness. In this statement he just belittled anyone who got captured while serving in a war. And IMO these people have earned more respect than Trump ever has.

It's hard for me to respect any pilot in Vietnam who was bombing the country in that war but the president dissing anyone who was shotdown is bad form - we kinda agree there. Respecting people just because they took part in a war regardless of the merit of the side they fought on isn't something I do so we'll just have to agree to disagree on that one.
