The dog's behaviour does not point to visual, though, my guess is sound (maybe a neighbour put up an ultrasound pest repellent), smell or previous bad experience.

I read the yellow paper editions of the dog compass thing. Haven't bothered to dig enough to check how extensive(credible) the study was. Probably wasn't.

The study is from 2013, published in 2014 in Frontiers in Zoology (which "is an open access, peer-reviewed online journal publishing high quality research articles and reviews on all aspects of animal life"). In the dogworld scientific developments are still slow, as only bit by bit more scientists become interested.
