I say if they do this work well, and can overcome the odds maintaining good behaviour for the duration of their sentence they should get a pardon and this should be recognized as valid work experience.
Furthermore, employers of the fire department should be forced put them at the top of the list for hiring, second only to career men who were ALREADY fire fighters, to combat any discrimination.
