It's easy to wonder about that, but the fact is with few exceptions US Presidents are selected by a small group of people well in advance of what appears to be a democratic choice. They are never what they appear to be, and if they are what they appear to be it's presented as some kind horrible mistake. Like Trump. It would be the same for any candidate who reaches the other side that isn't selected by that small group.
