LOL - Hey, Canadian right here. We didn't battle the British to the loss of thousands of brave young men to gain our independence. We just waited 80 years and began to slowly separate naturally. So although the law still requires every Canadian to care deeply about the royal wedding under threat of castration, that's a small price to pay for independence without war.

Being explicitly real: the reason Canada was granted independence later is in part due to American rebellion. Before the Revolutionary War, colonies that grumbled too loudly against the Crown were appropriately reprimanded and rebellious voices were quashed. There were multiple American armed and deadly rebellions that preceded the Revolutionary War, mostly against localized British puppet governments, such as Bacon's Rebellion and Cary's Rebellion. However, these were also quelled and the perpetrators publicly executed.
The reason the Revolutionary War holds a significant place in history is because it was...a "revolution". The ultra powerful were overthrown and expelled by the underdogs. This was a great blow to the Empire and it set a precedent that secession and independence could be obtained through enough grit and blood. If you look at the history of the British Empire it is quite clear that the Revolutionary Blow is a turning point in its history where it shows even they could falter. British rulers also weren't morons and they understood the costs of war and they were especially wary of how other powers could use uprisings to further weaken Britain's influence.
I understand your comment was said tongue in cheek but it would be unwise to believe that Canada would naturally become independent without the American Revolutionary War.

Hey man, don't be embarrassed that your fore-bearers didn't have the balls to get the job done. It's not your fault.

And look how the've all clustered at the border, like kittens at a tit.
Russia would have no issue taking foothold from the north... I say those americans who think things have become pussified, should make a new nation in the NWT/Yukon.
You do realise that USA has invaded Canada twice right?
Both times it got trounced, the 2nd time ended with the US capital on fire.

I know about the wars and our history, I mostly play dumb just so I don't get into deep philosophical stuff on here.
-Was also trying to get some fun explinations and links from Danman, I like how he operates.
It's crazy to think that France had territory from West Texas and Orleans up into the far NE.
^and how remnants of their culture and influence are still around. (wiki)

I don't care what Grothesk says trying to excuse the appalling disloyalty of your ancestors - had you simply remained loyal to the crown and addressed these issues as reasonable, pragmatic gentleman sirs you would have seen independence arrive gradually and we would all live today in a place called Canerica. I was born with loyalist privilege - I can't help but look down on you loud and violent yankees because it's part of my genetic heritage.
Actually not - my gramps came over from Scotland shortly after the turn of the century when he was a boy. He didn't know how to spell his name - his family only had their clan symbology - and because he arrived on a boat full of Irishmen my Scottish surname became Irish. Also "what if" playbacks of history are always fun to theorize on - but I think the worm turns so randomly that, were we to access a parralel universe with one single different outcome (Americans never revolted), we'd probably find all of our predictions of what would have happened were completely off.
