The Thing Special Effects

Chest Defibrillation - The Thing (5/10) Movie CLIP (1982) HD

When I saw The Thing (1982) directed by John Carpenter, there were a few scenes that scared the living shit out of me. I remember thinking the special effects were so well done. I never thought that they would remain classics years later. I just watched it the other day and was impressed with how good scenes looked. It is solidified as one of my top 10 favorite movies. The "You've gotta be fucking kidding" chest defibrillator scene, the dogs scene, and the Bennings howling scene absolutely stunned me when I saw it as a tyke and they are still good. I could never bring myself to see the 2011 remake because it can't possibly compare to the original. (The 1982 movie isn't actually a remake of the 1951 film The Thing From Another Planet as some have said)

The lack of stop-motion, like Sinbad and Clash of the Titans-both movies which I love, was a big jump at the time for these types of effects. There was actually a scene filmed for it using stop-motion but it never made it into the film. Just as John Carpenter said in 1997, "You won't see a movie like The Thing for a long time."

For some reason the howling Bennings gave me nightmares.

Don't forget, they did most of/all the effects in the prequel using practical methods, and then completely CG'd over the entire thing so none of the practical effects were on screen.
