Sam Harris on Dunning-Kruger

didn't i teach u about the dunning kruger effect a couple years ago?

anyway, lately i've been thinking one of their premises is semi-flawed. they say it's a statistical impossibility for everybody to be above average, but it is actually possible if everybody is using different metrics. take their first study with teachers - everybody says they think they're an above average teacher, ok but why? teacher A says they're the best because their classes are most enjoyable, teacher B because they make the most effort to explain clearly and in detail, teacher C because 1-2 of their students each year gets into an ivy league college, teacher D because they have the highest number of university acceptances each year, teacher E because they get on well with their students and feedback is positive, teacher F because they stick to the textbook the most closely, etc. each is "better" than the other teachers according to what they deem is most important to determine quality.

what that boils down to i think isn't that people fail to accurately judge their performance, but they choose a metric to evaluate themselves with that doesn't correspond to what actually measures performance. when that comes to dinner table discussions, the guy who thinks he knows everything hasn't failed to judge his knowledge, he's just judged it by something that doesn't correspond to a measure of knowledge, such as "i listen to john johnson every day, and that guy is a genius, so i'm a genius too."

Harris is a zionist so I never watch his videos. To be a zionist you have to be intellectally dishonest - a write-off in philosophy & intellectual discussion.

Edit: softened the language a little :p

You must not listen to Trump either, then?

Trump's a dick but I'm grateful he prevented Hilary from weilding that power. Just look at what she did as SecState. She's Satan's little helper.

I find the biggest problem with Trump is all the haters to be honest. He's corporatised a few things, like any republican would but his foreign policy so far is not as offensive as a typical president. Besides the Jerusalem move & the mishap with bombing the Syrian airbase it's pretty decent. FP is the thing I care most about since I don't live in USA & it has such a big effect on the rest of the world. Both of which are forgivable. Recognizing Jerusalem, although it's a historic mistake, at least keeps the neocon corner quiet for a while. The guys who want USA to wage war on Israel's enemies etc. Trump so far has not rocked the boat re: Iran and has actually moved USA closer to Russia. Both of these things are great.

Hilary is a total neocon appeaser & if she thought it politically prudent too cause more bloodshed she'd  be more than happy to play aloong.

From what I understand from right wingers, Obama (under whom Hillary was a high-ranking politician) betrayed Israel.  So wouldn't she be *less* zionist than Trump, who so clearly has his nose up Israel's ass that it's comical that we're even speaking upon it like there is a question?

Obama never "betrrayed Israal". That's dumb dumb talk.

It's pointless talking about stuff as "right wingers beleive X" or whatever. I don't give a crap what the Right Wingers who parrot Fox News talking points have to say. Same goes for people who parrot CNN's propaganda, whether it's pro-war or anti-Trump.
