i'm impressed that this guy hasn't gotten sick of it all yet, and also that he's refining and improving his designs. according to the (youtube) vid description, he had a double problem with water - dampness allowing mold to grow in the thatch which then attracted moths, and the ground becoming soft resulting in the previous stricture tipping forward, hence using more uprights this time and also sinking them deeper.

I haven't done much construction in my life, but what I have done is build a couple wooden houses from the ground up. Small pre-fabricated houses. If there's one thing clear when building a house it is that the foundations are the most important part of the process: and there's no nerfing the foundations once the house is set up. So if you were in a situation where building a house was tantamount to survival, I would definitely not rush the foundations. As for dampness and insects: it's the middle of the freaking jungle...he probably has that fire on 24/7, smoke helps keep most insects away: nature has taught insects for millions of years that smoke means fire, fire means danger.
