We're supposed to believe Iran are "terrorists" when they've been fighting US-armed & trained [link] Wahabi head-choppers for years.
In this press conference the best Pompeo could do to justify the "terrorist" label was to accuse Iran of firing missiles into Saudi Arabia. That has never happened. The Houthis are reportedly backed by Iran and the US-backed Saudis have been waging a vicious war in Yemen for several years, a result of which is widespread famine & an outbreak of cholera.
Who's interests are being served?

stuff like this that is clearly detrimental to US policy makes me wonder, like maybe this was the actual bargain between the saudis and the US. not money for weapons, but a big spend on US weapons in return for contriving something against iran.

I think it goes well beyond a single deal made with the Saudis. It's obvious that the Israelis are going to benefit from this anti-Iran stance, they've been advocating a total break up of the states in the region for decades. Those 2 countries are pretty much in alliance at the moment & have been working behind the scenes with the US in covert activity for years. Saudi has mega-bucks & Israel has mega-influence on US policy. The shadow state is a cross border alliance & there's no doubt it's got a heavy influence on US policy.
