how is that illegal? so what if they got money from russia? they're not obligated to give it to the trump campaign, but they can certainly choose to and that's perfectly legal. as soon as the NRA receives the money, it's their money not russian money.

This is similar to "Hillary received $X00,000 from Saudi Arabia". Russia up until ~2017 was considered a straight up ally but they were painted in a negative light. There's nothing illegal about it, but it can be spun to look rotten.

The Cllinton Foundation received between 10 and 25 million in donations directly from the Kindom of Saudi Arabia. It's on their website
At the least it makes it kinda sleazy for Clinton to present herself as a champion of women's rights when she's selling political favours to the Saudis llke that.
It also compromises her position as secretary of state, especially taking into account the geopolitics of the middle east & what happened while she held the position.... IE the "Arab Spring"
When you compare her career to Trump's and then how they're both treated by the FBI, this IMO shows that the FBI are incompetent.

Investigating means there has been no conclusion made yet. The investigation itself isn't even fact because this is alleged by anonymous sources. Articles are not legal documents. Which is why we need named sources and real documents, to confirm allegations. That way those people can testify against them if an actual crime was committed.
Until that happens, which goes for all the "news" about Trump, nothing is going to happen.
If this actually is what happened, they have only revealed that Trump has no direct link to the crime because a Russian went out of his way to hide the intent of his contribution and NRA helped him do it.
And also, Donald Trump was rich. Why would he need campaign contributions from shadowy gangsters from Russia?
Unless, NRA spent money for the Conservatives during the election, which would continue once Trump won the nomination.
And the money they allegedly spent on Trump, after they received donations from a lifetime member of the NRA would inevitably go to anyone who won the nomination anyway.
And if you actually read the article, you find out that the White House cancelled the Russian's invitation to an meet and greet event followed by a breakfast(not a private meeting to conspire against the free world) because his background with Russian criminal organisations was revealed by Spanish authorities, and not a result of the investigation.
Another thing to note is that the article says:
"The reporting gap could be explained by the fact that independent groups are not required to reveal how much they spend on Internet ads or field operations, including get-out-the-vote efforts."
So the writers of this article are reaching far using very little information that can be confirmed at all.
So still, as of a few days ago, Donald Trump is not the target of any of the investigations taking place. Any of them.
While this story came out in January, none of the investigations have closed and concluded any involvement by Donald Trump since.
It's going to be a long four years for some people out there. I can't even imagine what happens if he's re-elected.
