Flu is beleived to be much less contagious. And we are still learning about COVID-19. So maybe the flu is worse on average but old people take preventive measures for the flu (flu shots, staying inside) and are (somewhat) ok but if COVID-19 is half as bad as the flu but gets to all those old folks with no defense the results could be much worse.

Anyway, here is an article showing that COVID-19 is much more lethal than the flu but as the article says, we don't know how many are really infected so the death rate could be much lower...

https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-compared-to-flu-mortality-rates-2020-3

Summary:

Is COVID-19 bad - yes.

Is it worse or better than the flu? We don't know and won't know till it's done.

...but it is definitly showing bad behaviour and has the potentional to be worse than the flu.

The fatality rate is estimated between 1.0-3.4%

The fatality rate of "Spanish Flu" was 2.5%

I'm no alarmist but I'm starting to think this could be severe because of how it's being mishandled. An upcoming depression is not out of the question.
