This was well presented! The concept of telling a story or just doing tricks became muddled when it became monetized and "You Can Do Magic Too!" kits started being sold to children in the 60's. Amateur magicians had a handful of sleight of hand tricks but all they could do was attempt to emulate the theatrics of the greats, which was great for the amateur but degraded the mystique of the whole.
