500 Lugansk Cossacks and Cuban Cossacks (volunteers from Russia) were defending Lyman / Krasny Liman for around 2 weeks
reenforcements were sent to hold the road open rather than counter-attack, suggesting whoever was left was evacuated
Lyman's pre-war population was 15k & wasn't a logistical hub so the strategic importance of it is more about what happens next (can Russia hold the next defensive line etc)
