Here is a #1 pop and country hit from the year 1960 which includes lyrics about shooting a man in cold blood over a woman, shooting at authorities, and the glorification of being a rebel. It's a fuckin' tits awesome song and it for certain didn't inspire anyone in the Baby Boomer generation to kill anyone.

Would I be wrong in assuming the artist is setting the scene in the old wild west? If you referrencing those old times it makes sense to sing about shooting, killing and as you put it, being a rebel. It's part of history. It's different if the message applies to modern times. We have evolved.
