You are really fucking stupid of you think think is not way worse then they are reporting. You dont quarantine 30 million people becuase 2000 people got sick and 41 died. 30-40 cases have popped up around the world already and you mean to tell me its becuase those 30-40 just happen to come into contact with those 2000 in a country of almost 2 billion? Hundreds of thousands or even millions are infected and thousands are dying. How many hospital beds do you think a city of 11 million people have? I bet its more then 2000! Yet they are maxed out and they are building another hospital just to house the sick from this virus.

I don't think they're covering up the severity. There are criticisms to be made but lack of transparency since the central govt mobilised around 20th Jan isn't one of them.

The main criticism is how it's been handled by local authorities in Wuhan since early December when the first cases were coming in. It's unclear how much of a cover up it was but it's looking like they delayed ringing the alarm for weeks.

China is not monolithic, it's actually quite decentralised. Xi has been trying to centralise it more but it still has a way to go, obviously. Their meritocratic system also doesn't lend itself well to crisis management - local leaders are often trying to look good to get promoted & this can lead to bad decisions & lack of transparency.

The NYTimes does a decent job at highlighting some of the problems:

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/25/world/asia/coronavirus-crisis-china-response.html

(they throw a few elbows for good measure with their choice of adjectives but the substance is mostly decent IMO)
