Little known facts about the paper & forestry industry:

1) Paper mills are stinky, but they're not really polluting anything so long as the chemicals are treated correctly. People associate the stinkiness with pollution, but it's mostly just a nuisance.

2) Young man-made forests, are actually better for the environment. Young tress produce a higher net amount of oxygen than older tress. Ancient forests produce almost no net oxygen as they consume as much oxygen as they produce in order to subsist. Most forestry companies have an allowed % of their total owned & protected forest that they can use for forest cycling, meaning that they are both users and protectors of the world's forests. Forestry and saw mills that give a bad reputation to forestry are those that are not following regulations, especially in 3rd world countries.

Conclusion: Going paperless might seem like a fast and easy way to reduce carbon emittion, but that doesn't mean we want to reduce forestry to 0, in moderate amounts, it's actually healthier for the planet.

Im just messin with ya. I try to tell "hippies" all the time that it is not the paper industry that is destroying the rain forest, but it does not compute with them. They have the need to attack a corporation close to home rather than point the finger at some indigenous farmer trying to raise cattle or palm oil. That way nothing gets done, just how they like it!

Over time our friends group has naturally been reduced to those that can withstand being called out on the fallacies in their arguments during politics dinners. You'd be surprised how fast people get offended when you let them know they're relying ad-hominem to back up their criticism to either pole of the government. The most frequent argument i hear is "how can you vote for X. X used to do Y before, and she/he is a complete idiot".

When hippies criticize forestry they rely heavily on appeals to emotion, because they lack the education to know otherwise. This is NO surprise, since usually in order to know how the world works you need to spend time and money studying.
