What's amazing to behold is the truth of what Christ says. They have the freedom of complete decoupling from truth - that presents a lot of options and opportunities unavailable to folks like you and I. But, nevertheless, the content of their characters brings about, after much suffering and destruction, their downfall and terrible end. Again and again.
But, and I'm pretty convinced of this, this is the end. The time that we are living in - it's actually the end of what came before and the start of something new.
