I wonder what happened to the solar power plants using mirrors to concentrate the heat using salt storage as a battery.

not really a broad use battery tho is it. you won't charge one of these in your phone, or scooter or watch. sure, it may provide the power instead of coal or w/e. but how many acres of solar do you need for how big a battery for how big a supply? i'd like to see the long term outcome. of course, lithium ion is lame af

The point is to use the excess energy that you get from renewables. It's pretty good if it's at +90% efficiency at storing energy, but the down side is getting the energy out of the battery, which drops it to 30-40%.  Still, it's "free energy" that would be wasted anyway.
