hey, i've been noticing that for the past few weeks that a bunch of new accounts are being created everyday. its up to something like 400 or 500 new accounts. are they bots? just about everyone on the user page with 6 points is an account made in the last 2 weeks

yeah, captcha isn't even slowing them down. it's like 1 every 10-15 minutes and usally from a vpn. captcha has settings so i might try making it harder. i've been range banning ip addresses which looks like it's making a dent. it's tough to tell which accounts are legit because most are bots. most of the bots seem to be comming from china atm but there are also bots from russia, sweeden, and california. i'm being super careful with the range banning because i don't want to wipe out everyones ability to acess the site. the site was literally attacked by bots the other day shutting it down and merlock had to call for a hard server reset.
we are working on the problem :)

there should be an option in the admin/config/people/accounts part to make it so only site administrators can create new accounts. just got to be careful cause i guess you can turn off login also

then it must originate from China, I have no recollection of VPN or proxy servers in China, i could be wrong, but it would seem like something the CCP would ban. so the china IP or IP's would be the correct ones.
If they use a proxy server, their real IP is still visible.
There was this one fella here who was pro China got into a vendetta with everyone...
Soon as he lay's low this kind of shit happens, and this pattern has shown before.
