can confirm most of this is true.

japanese food isn't healthy at all, just people don't overconsume and get a reasonable level of exercise. it's also a myth that medical care is advanced, it's actually quite a way in the past, but because people have healthy lifestyles, lifestyles diseases are very uncommon and thus lifespans are longer.

the lack of tech is sometimes painful, because even when we do have it, people refuse to use it or allow others to use it. same as with medical care, people believe that old stuff is better even when it is demonstrably worse. a very common phrase here is "yes that may be true, but i feel that this (old way) is better."

other old-schools things that are still going strong here are toy stores, cd and dvd rental (though stores have blu-ray also), and bookstores. tbh though the physical media sales are great, because you have your own copy that can't just disappear, unlike something in a digital library that the company might just choose not to renew the licensing for.

oh and every child now has a school tablet computer! ...which is kept locked up except for the one single hour a week where they're trotted out for kids to look at pdf copies of their worksheets on... seriously.

Ha! Thanks for chiming in and confirming. With .pdfs starting to make the rounds, scan and email will replace the fax in 10yrs or so (factoring in attrition in the office). And you're right about solid media having its advantages. Folks from North America will eventually have to make a pilgrimage your way if the want to admire Daryl Hannah's sweet 20-something @ss running into the surf in Splash, now hidden by Disney behind longer digital hair (a sin against humanity).

And as for the phrase "yes that may be true, but i feel that this (old way) is better."... commiserations. This is the equivalent of the most disgusting word in the English language, ie. 'notwithstanding.'
