like practically everything in "traditional Japanese culture" it's a tweak & re-brand of Chinese culture, in some cases Korean. Karate was developed in Okinawa while Okinawa was a vassal of China & is rooted in Chinese martial arts - Shoalin & Fujian styles specifically. Kara Te literally translates to China Fist but in the early 20th century the Imperial Japs imported it & used a different translation of the characters to pretend that's not what it means lol.

Karate literally means empty hands. The samurai of Japan had no need for striking arts as they fought in full plate armor and were primarily horseback archerers. That is why they developed what is basically modern ju-jitsu. And it would only be utilized on the battle field if you were thrown off your horse, lost/broke your spear, lost/broke/dropped your sword and were left unarmed. Aikido is based off of Aiki-jutsu as Judo is based off of ju-jitsu.
Any warrior culture is going come up with their own version of a fighting style/art. And seeing that we all share a similiar anatomy (2 arms,2 legs, a vulnerable neck, etc.), it's no wonder wrestling/ju-jitsu and striking arts from all around the world are so similar.

The word literally means "China hand": " kara" is Japanese for "Tang" or "China", and " te" is "hand". It was developed in Okinawa & has origins in Fujian martial arts. Ryukyu was a tributary state under China for centuries & was taught all kinds of things, including martial arts by way of experts going there to live on cultural exchange trips.
In the early 20th century when Imperial Japan was trying to colonize Okinawa the Jap government used a different interpretation of the Kara character to deliberately remove the Chinese origin, simplified it & started teaching it to their rapey military. It was an existing martial art that doesn't come from Japan at all.

The Okinawan masters of "karate" never liked having their differing styles of combat all grouped under one general name but I believe it was the top 5 masters of that time (in the 1930's), when being inducted into the buto-kan, that decided to change the original "tang-dynasty" kara to "empty" kara. It would make sense as "empty hands" would describe better the primary teachings of karate.
And Okinawan masters to this day credit China's hard-style kung-fu as their main influence. And their use of nunchuks, kamas, tonfas, staffs, etc. is a direct result of the samurai from mainland Japan taking away their rights to actual weapons, which resulted in the Okinawan karate practictioners to turn to farming implaments to defend themselves.
But all this doesn't take away from the fact that the Japanese mainlanders had developed their own form of martial arts in aiki-jutsu and jiu-jitsu, along with the many sword, spear, and archery disciplines.
History is interesting because it makes us realize how we are all more closely related than different.
