there's nothing to be worried about from a government of cronyism. you don't get anywhere in the CCP by being honest, you agree with whatever the bosses have decided and create reports showing that the bosses' dreams are coming true. the party consists entirely of yes men and leadership that thinks everything is great because they are constantly being told that everything is going great, and so terrible plans are continued. mao probably died thinking his plan to eradicate birds was brilliant and having no idea that it had actually killed millions of people. no-one would dare risk causing him/china/the party to "lose face" by pointing out that it wasn't a good idea. actually wouldn't be at all surprised if people afraid for themselves or their families still push the false narrative that mao's policies were anything but a disaster of incompetence.

the same thing is more visible in russia right now. the war is not going well, and when told so putin's response wasn't to question the wisdom of his plan, but to blame and imprison the 2 who brought him the news. that kind of government is inconducive to anything going well in a country. the only thing cronyism can possibly produce is failure.
