A "planetkiller". Details can also be found on the NASA website. Less spectacular language, though.

Better downrate this - don't want people thinking the Sun is an actual real and present danger to us as compared to the carbon jaberwocky.  "Planet killer" refers to the effects a direct strike of something like this would have on our present global infrastructure. Just a few hours earlier and you'd get to experience mobs of desperate cannibals searching  specifically for people like you to cook up for nums nums, and you could maybe show them some old potholer54 videos assuming you saved a few drops in the generator.

That seems a bit unlikely.

It's only a matter of time when a big one hits us. Might be tomorrow, could be 50 years. Won't be the end of the world but a shitty situation none the less if a good portion of the worlds electric grid goes down.

It's so weird that an event that is real, demonstrable, and occurred before with demonstrated catastrophic results when projected into our current time is treated like something unlikely while people literally panic over a carbon religion that projects doomsday scenarios that repeatedly fail to materialize, but which nevertheless uses these unscientific predictions as a call to action. The similarity to other doomsday religions is striking.

Reinforcing the North American electrical grid against this kind of X-flare would only cost about a half trillion dollars at worse and we'd never have to worry about this again (and eventually we would likely transition to energy production methods that are less affected by such things). Instead let's spend trillions on validating the feels of the participants of a modern secular cult.

so we should prioritize action on something that we can't control and might never occur rather than on something we are causing and is already affecting us?

It will definitely occur, and definitely soon, and we're affected by the source every day. The level of uncertainty associated with carbon-focused climate change is much higher, which see the Sept 18th paper where climate change scientists revealed they had overestimated the warming effect of carbon dioxide by 50%.

If the world lost power for 30 days what do you think would be the resulting death toll? It's hard to know but I would estimate it at between 500 million and 2 billion, with most of those deaths in developing nations. In a worst-case runaway scenario with total loss of social cohesion maybe as much as 3 billion. You?

I live on the very edge of a city. But don't misunderstand - I'm not saying "Oh God the Sun is about to fry us!!"I'm saying the danger of that occurring in your lifetime is like 50x higher than the likelihood that any of the climate models from the carbon religion will prove accurate at any point over the next century. There's a real danger, and we're not doing anything about it because of a false danger that serves political and ideological conveniences.

You make a good point, but even the carbon levels and climate change are a threat, they can cause more natural dissasters and are something to take serious aswell. But yea the sun is a direct threat and could fuck us up real bad real quick. And its actually not just that, yea the sun is a real threat and its close, but things like meteorites, asteroids and supernovas are a serious risk too, next to other freak space weather events and phenomenas. There is so much power and force out there we could be wiped out in the blink of an eye at any given second and wouldnt even see, feel or hear it coming. So be happy and enjoy life while u can!

If one of these "planet killer" outbursts would happen in our general direction we would either lose our internet forever or just die.

And he could never tell us about it.
