yeah, there are one or two more issues with the system. for the moment it's totaly impractical.

kind of feel like we already got them. you can deorbit a satellite. they say 10-40% of a satellite survives re-entry, depending on what its made from and thats on an orbit meant to burn it up.

I've got three serious concerns with this idea.
1: If these de-orbit in an uncontrolled manner they will still function the same way as if they were sent to blow up a target, except that there will be no way to control where. It would likely end up blowing a crater in an unhabitated location or into the ocean. But it can also blow up someone's house, or a school, hospital, a block of skyscrapers, a nuclear reactor.... Just roll the dice and see what you get.
2: These will lead to a militarization of space and in the event of a conflict in space would result in the significant generation of space debris, making space completely unusable by humanty for centuries to come.
3: The escalation and paranoia caused by these weapons constantly floating above everyone's heads ready to be used at a moment's notice with no real countermeasures once launched would cripple world politics.
These should be outlawed by treaty before they start being developed.

an uncontrolled de-orbit of the satellite isnt as big of a deal. the satellite and rods are in a stable orbit. its the rocket on the end of the rod that makes it go ballistic. so a a de-orbit thats not on the same trajectory is going to have it going thru the upper atmosphere a bunch of times, each pass loosing a bunch of speed until it goes into the lower atmosphere and starts to burn up some more. it really comes down to how much speed the satellite looses before the rods break free.
