Rouhani: Iran 'deeply sorry' about downing of plane

Those responsible will be sued and investigated. Victims' families will be compensated. [full statement]

Explanation from the Iran Armed Forces [link]

The IRGC Aerospace Force commander accepted full responsibility & held a presser. [English translation]

- this is an interesting read ^

He says the plane deviated into a sensitive military zone:

---

Iran should have shut down civilian airspace when they went into high alert & they need a proper IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) system to prevent these mistakes. I'd like to know what made the plane deviate from its course.

"I will never apologize for the United States – I don't care what the facts are... I'm not an apologize-for-America kind of guy." The quote, although unrelated to the downing of the Iranian air liner and not in any official capacity, has been attributed as such.

He said it within a month of the Flight 655 incident. To this day the US has never apologized or admitted legal liability for mistakenly shooting down that plane. Iran had to sue for 8 years just to get the US to pay the victims families some compensation.

It's a line he used over and over again way before the incident. Was about not apologising for american "ideals" and here as the others it was a stab at Dukakis "Unamerican" liberal views. It was bullshit, but still not about flight 655.

Still facts matter, some snippet out of context is a problem. Secondly why post this at all? The US did it ergo Iran ok? As for the Apology and liability .... it was 30+ years ago, this happend this week.

Sorry, not sorry

Yeah it was just part of a rally speech, not some kind of comment directly related to the incident - cheers for helping clear that up I didn't know. It still shows how America approaches these situations. I think it's relevant.

No need to apologise, that's not your job.

To be fair, just before that declaration their official position was still:

“Scientifically, it is impossible that a missile hit the Ukrainian plane, and such rumours are illogical,”

It looks like they were committed to deny the whole thing until they realized that nobody was going to buy their BS. Then their position went full 180.
