So they are bred and slaughtered like cows? I read comments on here that they are like a plague in parts of the US.

Plague is a strong word. Wild pigs are more a plague but they're mostly effecting Texas and the more southern States. According to Wikipedia, "Most primary natural predators of white-tailed deer have been basically extirpated in eastern North America, with a very small number of reintroduced red wolves, which are nearly extinct, around North Carolina and a small remnant population of Florida panthers, a subspecies of the cougar." White tails, if left alone, will overpopulate in my neck of the country. They are also a bain to soybean farmers who will sometimes advertise their land as open for hunting as no charge just to cut down on crop losses.
