If yhou like thief download The Dark Mod it started of as a Doom 3 mod but now it is standalone many maps have been created over the years

yes i vaguely remembered it when i read your comment. turns out i forgot about it because at the time it was still in it's infancy. looks awesome now though.
Brood War was what really took off in SK, I think it came out in 1999

As a spoiled kid I played nearly all of the mentioned. I suppose '98 was the year that really sparked my passion for videogames. So much so that I'm now studying game design.
There's also a great case to be made for 1997: Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye, Final Fantasy 7, Quake 2, GTA, Castlevania Symphony of the Night.
The late 90's and beginning of the new millenium was such a great time for games.
