More like idiotic pride. If there were a mechanism to get them independent I would be all for it but they would be fucked.

I am German but I have been living in Spain since 2005.
Spain is made up of various independant regions, one of them is catalunya, they also have their own language. Catalunya is the richest region in Spain as they live mostly of tourism. So the "independistas think they are better than everybody else and want to have their own country so they don't have to support the other regions any longer. They lured the poor part of the population into supporting them by telling them they would be "oh so much better off" when independant. So they orchastrated an unconstitutional, erratic and completely un co-ordinated vote, to which the spanish government reacted very poorly by envolving police in an affort to block the vote.
The real problem is that catalunya's "leaders" think, when "leaving" spain, they will remain within the EU and also want to retain the Euro, neither would be possible. They would be a country witin Europe with no ties whatsoever to the Eu and with thei own currency and new (with spain) as well as re-instated border controls and of course trade tariffs that need to be negotiated.
Some traditionally catalunyan businesses already moved their headquarters out of the region in a panic move, many more would follow.
Anyway it ain't gonna happen. We just have to wait for the mediteranean temper to cool down.

Like I said, I wouldn't care much if they became independant. In Germany there is a Bavaria independance party as well but they take it more with teutonian patience and they know that there is no mechanism to exit Germany. It does not make sense and can't be compared to the brexit but isf they want to fuck themselves up they are very welcome to do so.
In the end what they really want is more money to feed their corrupt system.
