10-year-old Boy Gets Restrained After He Lunges at Police Officer

After a video of two officers restraining a 10-year-old boy in Athens went viral over the weekend, police explained the circumstances of the incident Monday afternoon and released body camera footage. The incident happened Friday as officers responded to a domestic violence call in the 300 block of Sartain Drive. After a man, identified in the police report as Jawoski Mandell Collins, was placed in custody, “the suspect’s 10-year-old child became extremely emotionally distraught,” Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Epifanio Rodriguez said in a statement. As an officer walked the suspect to his patrol car, the child attempted to block his path and had to be removed and restrained by adult family members, police said. “As the suspect was being placed in the back of the patrol car, the video clearly shows the child run past family members and again ran towards our officer and lunged at one of the officers,” Rodriguez said. “Our officer caught the child in midair and the momentum of the child launching himself caused the both of them to land on the patrol car.” The child continued with the outburst, at which time the officer placed him on the ground, according to the statement. The officer told the child he was not under arrest and that he would let him up if he would remain calm. The officer allowed the child to get up when he felt he had calmed down, police said. The video shows that both officers held the boy down at one point and had a pair of handcuffs out. However, the boy was never handcuffed. “Our officer began to console the child and helped him to understand what was happening to his father,” Rodriguez said. “The child asked to speak with his father and was allowed to do so by our officers.” The video was posted by a woman who said she was a relative of the boy. In the domestic violence call, officers arrested Collins on charges of aggravated assault and false imprisonment, according to the incident report. The woman who contacted authorities said she went to see Collins to borrow money, police said. When he asked her to spend some time with him, she said she needed to go back to her children. Police said he then became upset and placed her in what she said was a choke hold. Police Chief Scott Freeman ordered an internal investigation, but the officers were not placed on administrative leave. The body cam video was reviewed before release by the county attorney because it involved a juvenile, police said.

Thank fuck that there are videos like this showing good (US) police work. Poor kid was extremely stressed and the bunch of dumb women did not help.

completely agree. most cops are awesome, and it'd go a really long way if we saw more cooperative cops well as the good cops disowning the bad ones.

The cop did kinda overreact.

Do you really need to put a small kid on the ground and start yelling "stop resisting" and make all that fuzz about "attacking an officer"? FFS it's a kid, just grab his arm and hand em over to the mother.

I think I missed all of the parenting being done by all the baby mommas.

Pretty half-assed attempt at controlling the kid judging by what happened. I know if I had ever approached police, my mother would have clocked me and I'd never get near the cops.

There wasn't 0 effect BUT nothing the women did helped the situation, quite the contrary, after their attempts to control the kid he launched himself at the officer even harder.

In situations like this halfarsed discussing is ineffective as the kid is way too stressed to be receptive for arguments. Physically restraining DID help, he got the cuffs out just in case it would not work.

Holding him down is an emergency measure and should not form part of the learning process, though, as this really only calmed the kid down for in this instance but will have little or no effect for similar future situations.

The more important part of the "experience" for the kid was that it did not end with the punishment but after he calmed down (and thus became receptive for arguments) he got what he wanted (talking to his dad), which in the end was the learning experience that is very likely to stick in the future.

So in effect this was a very child friendly approach considering the situation and erratic behaviour..

Unfortunately, considering the reason for the father's arrest, I assume learning by (severe) punishment will be the only thing the kid gets in this family.

In the beginning of the video, the women actually tried to take the kid inside the house, but the dad started yelling "let em go", so they did.

I agree, it panned out ok in the end in this case, but could you handle a situation differently other than slamming a 10 year old to the ground and scream in his ear "stop resisting"? Maybe it's possible? You can hear in the cops voice how overly seriously he's taking it like it's a life and death situation. Even the women start freaking out at that point. It just escalates the situation, but as I said, it turned out fine in this case because he scared the kid and got him back to his senses.

As a father of 2, it's just my opinion. I've never had to use physical violence to discipline my kids and they don't go bouncing off the wall.

Well your kids grow up in a healthier environment then this little bugger has to.

These women didn't want to take charge or responsibility, that's why they listened to the guy that was arrested, probably they feared what would happen if they disobeyed when the guy comes back.

Like I sad beore the more important bit is that the situation did not end with the punishment. Overwhelming the kid was necessary and stamping a foot down in front of the women as well. I guess these guys have experience with these kind of family situations.

That kid is going to be a full-grown man capable of killing all kinds of things with nothing but his bare hands one day. Yes it was necessary. Doesn't matter how unfair the situation seems, going apeshit like that NEVER makes it better when you're dealing with state authority. I've seen enough videos here on Spiked indicating it's a lesson many of these young men weren't taught as children because they didn't have responsible fathers in their lives.

Maybe it's hard to relate what a 10 year old might be going through in a situation like that.

Now, I don't know the kid, maybe he is a real fucking pain in the ass, but in this situation, I can see why he would act like that. Many kids would.

He is seeing his dad being taken into prison, he doesn't understand why or for how long and it's freaking him out and he is just trying to defend his dad, by all means. Kids are irrational especially in stressful situations and you can't really expect them to act rationally and hold them to the same standard as a grown man. (which is the thing that pissed me off in this video, because the officer did just that). Maybe it was a good lesson for the kid or maybe he will end up hating cops because of this, who knows. All I'm saying he could have handled it differently and treated the kid as a kid.

Anyone get the feeling that this was the first time that boy had ever been properly disciplined?
