It's not correct that Mao took this region as stated in the video (3:00). Since 1759 it's been under the rule of the Chinese regimes & under different Chinese dynasties prior to that.
The territory came under the rule of the Qing dynasty in the 18th century; which was later replaced by the Republic of China government. Since 1949, it has been part of the People's Republic of China following the Chinese Civil War.

even if it's wrong, I wonder if it's effective, or if it's counterproductive. what if the real terrorists and rebels find ways around it? while the normal people grow resentful. i'm assuming it works in the short term, but isn't a long term solution. how long can they keep it up, and is the cost justified by the economic goals that they're looking for in the region?

Their long term goals are likely: own the natural resources & transit routes & prevent others eg. Russia from owning them.
Whatever they're doing it seems to be effective because there haven't been terrorist incidents since the 2014 train station knife/bombing attack. They'd had one in 2010 & another in 2011.
Maybe they'll relax the more prickly forms of surveilance as time goes by so long as there are no more incidents.
For now I'd say these Uyghurs need to get any ideas of seceding out of their heads. It's just not gonna happen. Nearly 50% are Han Chinese & they just have to deal with it.
