Ziggy's favourite place to walk right side of screen at 1:15 - beware that one or more homeless dudes have been known to occupy the canoe club shed at the upper edge of the forest trail in the summer.

I highly recommend that article Sal posted in the description. CP gov is quite the spectacle, and the article is not too badly written. Very close to Carleton Place is a town called Smiths Falls that is full of drug crime and drug-related gov. and police corruption - it's nicknamed "little Chicago". Carleton Place gets a lot of the runoff from Smith Falls and in doing so CP keeps Almonte the friendliest and quaintest town in Ontario by acting as a shit buffer. Maybe we should start calling Carleton Place "little Fresno". Here's winter at ground level:

Some summer views along the river:

I'm a 45 minute drive from there. It's all true. Low lives, multiple teen pregnancies and underachievers abound.

Not sure but he may be talking about Smith Falls. Of all the places I have seen and been forced to be present in, the empty husk that is Kitchener is by far the saddest with the possible exception of North Bay. I'd have to flip a coin on those, but I would be challenged to say which place has more welfare offspring of a failed blue-collar economy and pitbulls.

When I had to fly in I liked to stay at the Radisson because the steak dinner room service was awesome and  of course free (they also had pet-friendly and smoking rooms until a couple years ago), but when I walked Ziggy it was "dude who didn't finish high school walking a muzzled pitbull" after "dude who didn't finish high school walking a muzzled pitbull". I would sit at the table and eat my steak dinner while being entertained by the half-drunk offspring of factory-workers-turned-prostitutes as they threw bottles at each other and lit small items on fire while screaming "You wanna go... oh you wanna go? I'm ferkin crazy man you don't want this...oh you want this?" until the police show up and everyone scatters. You can observe this spectacle two to three times on any night of the week - doesn't have to be Friday or Saturday. Always a good time.

Grew up in North Bay, spent 16 years there. Gorgeous summers, beautiful winters and fantastic people. It's not great if you're driving through for 5 minutes but why so black and white? Again, lived in Guelph as well and spent a lot of time in Kitchener. Didn't find it bad at all.. What's your deal?

Relax, and apologies - if you knew my history with Sal you'd know that this rhetoric is tongue-in-cheek. My two best friends went to school and ended up living in North Bay, although one of them eventually left. I visited frequently in the late 90s and would stay for weeks at atime. Did all of my heavy drinking there - they had a bar there called the Zoo, and North Bay drank so much Molson Canadian that they would pay for bands like Our Lady Peace to play there. Never seen so may 15-year-olds pushing strollers, but I haven't been everywhere. Besides drinking and going to school there didn't seem to be much to do there. They had a movie theatre there that featured mono sound and a screen the size of my current TV. Every few years for a week there are disgusting insects up to your knees and that was unique. The people seemed fine, although I didn't interact very much with the local people since I was there to see my friends and hung out with their school friends. Besides I'm comparing it to Ottawa and I'm completely biased.

I lived in Waterloo for 7 years total and I did not enjoy my time there. Kitchener seemed like it was always being reconstructed. Certain parts of Kitchener reminded me of rundown areas of Mexico I had been through. Besides school and working in a few specific industries there wasn't much to make it a place worth living when compared to my native Ottawa and surounding areas. Nowhere to ski - that hill is a joke. And unless I'm mistaken I believe Sal lives there, so I was just dishing some back. There are pros and cons to living anywhere, but nowhere I've been has been as good as Ottawa and that's probably just because I grew up there.

Haha, understood!

So the zoo is now closedbut the connected bar called Cecil's is still kicking. Got in many a fight at the Zoo as it was one of the scummiest bars in the city, hahaa good times. Also, the insects you're talking about are called shad flies and get worse and worse as the years go on. People say that the number of shad flies indicate the health of the local lakes, who knows though.

I am in Ottawa now as well so I get where you are coming from.

Small world my friend, cheers!

Yes, at the top right of the page there is a "Navigation" tab and there is a link you can click called "Recent content".  Any time anyone uploads a video or a comment is created on a video it tells you how many new comments there are since you last checked.

I've started using the recent content screen - it updates most quickly out of all the screens and it shows you who has replied to what and when. You can find the recent content link in the upper right menu on the home page.
