I decided to test out VRChat and it does show some promise, but I have to say it is the best social VR platform in terms of entertainment value right now. Other platforms are a lot more reserved, offering only their own avatars, while VRChat lets people go pretty much apeshit if you have the modelling/animation skills.
Everything is awkward as fuck at first. Always. Until you rule out who the kids are and who the adults are, so you can feel comfortable in your own... in whatever skin you choose. You could be having a normal conversation when suddenly a giant anime woman will crouch down and pet your head, at scale. It's fucking bizarre, but fun.
If someone is bothersome you have the power to block them, which means not just muting them, but removing them entirely out of your existence. Also you can create a literal safespace, or touch zone, so that people won't be able to invade your personal space for whatever reason. Creating portals lets you travel to other places.
