Coronavirus outbreak: WHO to decide whether outbreak is international emergency | LIVE

The UN World Health Organisation has declared a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC)

What does a PHEIC mean?

International cooperation will be enhanced.

So far there's been 8 cases of human-human transmission outside of China - in Germany, Japan, Vietnam and the US.

WHO chief says there is "no reason for measures that unnecessarily interfere with international travel and trade". And "WHO continues to have confidence in China’s capacity to control the outbreak".

A WHO declaration of a PHEIC is rare, with only 5 going into effect since it was invented a decade ago. These include situations concerning the 2009 H1 virus that caused an influenza pandemic, West Africa's Ebola outbreak, polio in 2014, the Zika virus in 2016 and the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
