Telecoms have been doing EXACTLY THIS for many years to profile their subscribers - not their names, addresses, bank account numbers and text messages: you don't need that shit. What they get via DPI-based traffic classification and subscriber awareness is a unique identifier for each sub followed by ALL INFORMATION ABOUT THEM THAT CAN BE GENERALIZED - so where you live to within a kilometer or two, your gender, your browsing preferences broken into categories like "business", "sports", "shopping", "weather", "politics", "activism", "News source and article preferences", which items you've clicked on and the associated subject, which items you've purchased - all fed into an algorithm that then engages you in a targeted way.
It's not just browsing ads - a Telecom can associate your email address to a social data profile so that ad firms can purchase the information or even just buy a turnkey solution from the Telecom that targets you with tailored spam e-mail offerings and browsing ads. Obama's campaign used a Facebook app in 2012 to gather this data. Has anyone heard of Big Data? These databases serve as the feeding and anchor points for enabling a range of precision persuation use cases for advertisers.
