Ya I admire the courage of whoever developed this campaign. I was a product marketing manager for 5 years and had to constantly fight against a bunch of PC progressives forever calling into question my messaging approaches over fear of "offending" when my audience were technical dudes not graduates of gender studies.

It takes people who completely understand tone to push the envelope in a way that yields positive results.  A few years ago an ad agency created the below potential commercial for Hyundai which showcased a man attempting to commit suicide with their car in a garage.  The ad was bold and funny, but they clearly didn't have a grasp of the tone of the commerical.  It looked like something out of a drama rather than something light-hearted.  Hyundai was right to reject the potential ad and they *STILL* got flack for the ad, even though they neither requested it nor approved of it:

Shock and boldness can be powerful tools in marketing, but they are not always appropriate or effective.  The people who created the "Mayhem" series of commercials knew what they were doing and they did it properly; but it's necessary to also understand the power of tact.
