What If Aliens Arrived Tomorrow?

Are we alone in the Universe? With more than 100 billion galaxies in the observable universe and at least 500 billion planets in the Milky Way alone, don't you think we should have found something by now?

Even if a tiny percentage of those billions of planets hosted intelligent life, there would have to be tens of thousands of extraterrestrial civilizations out there.

Why we might be alone in the Universe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqEmYU8Y_rI

Personally, I dont think there are any intellegent lifeforms out there capable of reaching us. I dont think we will ever be able to reach another star. I dont think we will survive long enough to be able to and that it might not even be possible.

How would we find them or see them? If they exist we don't see them in an in-your-face way because they don't want us to see them. Assuming aliens who can travel these distances are so much more evolved than we are, follow that analogy to its logical conclusion - we are wise enough now to know how devasting it can be for us to make contact with an isolated population that has not progressed beyond the primative nomadic. We can introduce diseases that could kill them all and ideas that their culture cannot process without producing horrible results.

But it goes far beyond that. Aliens would observe us like we observe what we call "animals". The animals ARE aware of us - they see us and respond to us. But they do not understand us - that's not how it works. We understand THEM, and as we understand ourselves better we realize the profound responsibility we have in managing their existence in the midst of our own. But at the same time we DON'T perfectly understand animals - we find out every day how much we don't understand them. Caution seems to be the prudent approach in these matters.

Hmmm, that's a very interesting take on it.

A long time ago somewhere in highschool land I read a book called Have spacesuit will travel, written in the fifites when they still used slide rules, and I still think about it today. It was about a kid who traveled to Pluto where the equvalent of the UN but for the universe had the kid testify as to why they shouldnt blow up the whole earth becuase the earthlings were a danger to the stability to the Universe with their nukes and space crafts. The kid made the argument that the humans were like children and needed time to grow up a bit and figure things out. So the UN of the universe gave humans a bit more time to mature and get their shit together. I know its a silly book and all but it did make me start looking at humans as children and how we do need to grow the fuck up, lol. Image if they were just waiting for us to mature a bit, just waiting at teh edge of our solar system and keeping us isolated for our own protection. Yeah that'd be cool.
