Taliban bans opium as Afghanistan's poppy harvest begins

The Taliban has announced a ban on poppy production in Afghanistan — warning farmers that any crops of the flower (which produces the opium used to make heroin) would be burned; and vows jail time for anyone who proceeds with the upcoming harvest season.
